The manuscript is in good condition. There is only slight
fraying along the edges and some dirt on the pages.
One unruled column with 24-29 lines of text.
One main hand writing a rather formal cursive of
saec.
XVI
.Headlines with a different lettering. Apart from this, no decoration.
Modern cardboard covers. A paper label pasted on the spine with the shelf-mark. One
modern flyleaf added to the beginning of the manuscript.
The manuscript is written by a single scribe and consists of documents
relating to
Turku
and its cathedral. Since the last entry in the annals at the
beginning of the manuscript mentions a fire in 1593
, it is likely that the
manuscript was written soon after this date. According to Sainio (1952, 345–347)
the
copying could have been done by a cleric from Turku on behalf of Johannes Messenius
(d. 1636), who seems to have used the charters and annals in his rhymed
chronicles.However, this was not necessarily the case, since another
manuscript (
Stockholm, National Library, A 942
) contains the same set of documents
along with some additional ones. According to Klockars (1960, 16–18)
both
manuscripts depend on the same, now lost copybook as a source. This is suggested by
the fact that both display variants from the registries of Turku Cathedral (see
REA), and add a document not known from other sources.The later history of
the manuscript is unknown.
