                <condition><p>The manuscript is a composite of different booklets written around the
                    end of saec. XVI. The texts are by different hands and new texts regularly begin
                    in new quires. There are also notable differences in the paper used for
                    different sections. However, the letters (fols. 360–377) share one quire,
                    although they are written by two different hands.</p><p>The manuscript is in
                    good condition. There is fraying along the edges and some small dirt and
                    moisture damage.</p></condition>

              <p>Several different cursive hands of <date type="script" from="1500" to="1699">saec.
                  XVI or XVII</date>. Fols. 1–277 feature either one main hand producing a rather
                inexpert and uneven script or two main hands writing in stints of various
                lenght.</p>
              <p>The other texts are each usually written by one hand. Compilation of <persName
                  role="author">Johannes Magni</persName>’s work, written in humanistic cursive,
                probably by <persName role="scribe">Marcus Henrici Helsingus</persName>, the rector
                of the school in <origPlace>Turku</origPlace> from <date>1595</date>.</p>

          <history>
            <origin><p>The manuscript contains several historical texts written during the <origDate
                  from="1585" to="1615">end of saec. XVI or at the beginning of saec.
                  XVII</origDate>. They were written mostly as independent texts by several
                different hands. The latest texts contain reference to the year <date>1600</date>.
                Many of the historical texts end in the 1580s or 1590s, which provides a <hi
                  rend="italic">terminus ante quem non</hi> for those parts of the
                manuscript.</p><p>Some of the texts are related to the <origPlace>diocese of
                  Turku</origPlace>: the excerpt from <persName role="author">Johannes
                  Magni</persName>’s chronicle contains material specially pertaining to Finland,
                and was possibly written by <persName role="scribe">Marcus Henrici
                  Helsingius</persName> who served as the rector of the school in
                  <placeName>Turku</placeName> from 1595; also included is a letter by the Finn
                  <persName role="author">Johannes Jussoila</persName> and a pamphlet related to the
                abolition of certain church ceremonies. Heininen suggests the compilation may
                originate from the cathedral chapter in <origPlace>Turku</origPlace>.</p><p>The
                binding has been renewed but it seems likely that the compilation of the booklets
                into one manuscript took place at the time of writing.</p></origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>On the inner front cover: a struck-through name ‘Johan Gartz(?)’; possibly
                identical with the <persName role="owner">Johann Gartz</persName> (<persName role="owner">Johannes Matthiae
                  Gartzius</persName>) (d. 1681) who enrolled in the Åbo akademi in 1644, and held offices in the
                  <placeName type="provenance">Turku</placeName> Court of Appeals from 1653 to
                1680.</p>
            </provenance>
            <acquisition>
              <p>In the lower margin of the first flyleaf a faded note referring to ‘--- Svederi’ in
                April <date type="acquisition">1706</date> has been made. This possibly refers to
                <persName role="author">Matthias Sweder</persName> (<persName role="owner">Matthias Svederius</persName>) who was the
                professor of law in Turku from 1686, left Finland in 1713, and from whose collection
                  <persName role="owner">Germund Carl Cederhielm</persName> (1717–1789) acquired
                some of his books (see <bibl>Carlander 2, 493</bibl>).</p><p>On the inner front
                cover a pasted coat of arms belonging to Germund Carl Cederhielm, who presided over
                the Turku Court of Appeals in 1780–1788. The Cederhielm collections were bequeathed by his son,
                  <persName role="owner">Germund Ludwig Cederhielm</persName>, to the
                  <orgName>Uppsala University Library</orgName> in <date type="acquisition"
                  >1841</date>.</p><p>University Library’s shelf-mark ‘E 32’ found on the spine and
                inner front cover. The library’s stamp is found on the inner back cover.</p>
