                <condition><p>The manuscript is in good condition. There is some staining, and
                    ploughing (probably at the rebinding) has caused cropping to some of the
                    marginal annotations.</p><p>One watermark (or possibly a few similar ones)
                    featuring a <watermark>tower with two gates</watermark> appears throughout the
                    manuscript (cf. <bibl>Piccard 3, <hi rend="italic">Turm</hi>, X</bibl>). This
                    indicates that all of the leaves were part of the manuscript from the very
                    beginning.</p></condition>

              <p>The manuscript is written by a scribe who identifies himself as <persName
                  role="scribe">Laurentius Erici</persName> by signing his initials on fols.
                  <locus>19v</locus>, <locus>35r</locus>, <locus>67v</locus>, <locus>82v</locus>,
                  <locus>88v</locus> and his name ‘LAURE: ERICI’ on fol. <locus>88v</locus>. The
                same name also appears in a closely related manuscript of the <title><hi
                    rend="italic">Stadslag</hi></title> (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National
                  Library, Rålambs samling 143 4<hi rend="superscript">o</hi></ref>), which is dated
                  <date>1552</date> in Turku (and another section in <date>1569</date>).
                  <bibl>Schlyter (1865, XXVIII–XXIX)</bibl> suggest that both manuscripts were, in
                fact, written by Laurentius Erici.</p>
              <p>It should, however, be noted that the section dated 1569 in <ref type="mss">Rålambs samling 143</ref>, is
                written in a style very different from the one appearing in the <title><hi rend="italic"
                  >Stadslag</hi></title> texts in either manuscript. If the year <origDate>1590</origDate>,
                entered in the illumination on fols. <locus>66v</locus>, <locus>72r</locus>,
                  <locus>88r</locus>, and <locus>102r</locus> of this manuscript (it seems to be in same ink and by the
                same scribe who supplied the chapter numbers), refers to the year of writing then
                this would also make Laurentius’s career as a scribe an exceptionally long one.</p>
              <p>Additions were written in the margin by the main hand using a different script.</p>

              <p>Initials in red with interlaced and other types of decoration (similar to <ref
                  type="mss">Rålambs samling 143 4<hi rend="superscript">o</hi></ref>); here,
                occasionally with faces (e.g. fols. <locus>23v</locus>, <locus>32v</locus>,
                  <locus>88v</locus>). Initials for the articles usually 3–4 lines high, and those
                for the chapters <hi rend="italic">c</hi>. 6–10 lines high. On fol.
                  <locus>41v</locus>, initial ‘N’ with the text ‘NOSSE TE IPSE’ written inside; here
                  <persName role="scribe">Laurentius Erici</persName> has added his initials (in
                  <ref type="mss">Rålambs samling 143</ref>, a similar initial, where the initials
                are those of <persName>Nicolaus Olavi</persName>). More complex initials in red and
                black on fols. <locus>67v</locus>, <locus>72v</locus>, <locus>82v</locus>,
                  <locus>88v</locus>. Green is used in decorations on fols.

          <history>
            <origin><p>The manuscript contains a copy of <persName role="author">Magnus Eriksson</persName>’s <title><hi rend="italic"
              >Stadslag</hi></title>. A possible scribe is <persName role="scribe">Laurentius Erici</persName> whose name is found in the
                manuscript, as it is in another one with a closely related <hi rend="italic"
                  >Stadslag</hi> text dated <date>1552</date> in <placeName>Turku</placeName> (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National Library, Rålambs
                    samling, 143 4<hi rend="superscript">o</hi></ref>). This manuscript also carries the year
              <origDate>1590</origDate> entered in several places, which may indicate the year of writing.</p><p>The
                close relationship to a Finnish law manuscript is an indication that this one may
                also have originated in <origPlace>Finland</origPlace>.</p></origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>The manuscript has the name and initials of <persName role="scribe">Laurentius Erici</persName> entered in several
                places. He was possibly the scribe.</p><p>Additions made in <date type="addition" from="1600" to="1699">saec. XVII</date>, which
                  include <placeName type="provenance">Stockholm</placeName>’s privileges from 1636, suggest that it had come to Sweden by that
                  time.</p>
            </provenance>
            <acquisition>
              <p>The manuscript previously belonged to the <orgName>Engeströmska biblioteket</orgName>, entering it possibly with
                the collections of <persName role="owner">Mathias Benzelstierna</persName>, which arrived in after his death in <date type="acquisition">1791</date>. It shows
                shelf-marks ‘n:o 61’ found in the catalogue and on a spine-label, and ‘n:o 63’ found
                on the inner front cover and in Schlyter. Other numbers appearing are ‘165’ on the
                <locus>inner front cover</locus>, and ‘248’ on fol. <locus>1r</locus>.</p><p><locus>Inner front cover</locus>: ‘J. Carlstedt’(?)
                  in a hand of <date type="addition" from="1700" to="1799">saec. XVIII</date>.</p><p>
                The Engeströmska collection was donated to the <orgName>National Library of Sweden</orgName> in
                <date type="acquisition">1864</date>.</p>
