                  <locus>90r</locus>–<locus>91v</locus>, and <locus>92r</locus> (pen trials);
                including, on fol. <locus>90v</locus>, an <hi rend="italic">Officium de sancto
                  Erico</hi> of <date type="addition" from="1300" to="1499">saec. XIV–XV</date>,
                inc. ‘Gloria et honore coronasti eum ... per dominum nostrum Ihesum Christum filium
                tuum’. </p>
              <p>The most prominent Nordic saint in the missal is St <persName role="saint"
                  >Erik</persName> of Sweden, who is invoked in the <hi rend="italic">confiteor</hi>
                after the <persName role="saint">Virgin Mary</persName>, SS <persName role="saint"
                  >Peter</persName> and <persName role="saint">Paul</persName>, and St <persName
                  role="saint">Lawrence</persName> (<locus>fol. 17r</locus>), and for whom the book
                contains two different offices (fols. <locus>77v</locus>–<locus>78r</locus> and
                fols. <locus>90v</locus>–<locus>91v</locus>), the later one as an addition. The
                earlier one does not directly match any of those preserved in other medieval sources
                (for which see <bibl>Brunius 1998, 115–122</bibl>), although it generally accords
                with those preserved in <placeName>Linköping</placeName> and
                  <placeName>Uppsala</placeName> sources. Of the two collects of the first office,
                  <hi rend="italic">Deus qui es omnium regum gloria</hi> and <hi rend="italic"
                  >Letetur ecclesia tua</hi>, the first is found only in one <date from="1400"
                  to="1499">15th-century</date>
                <placeName>Linköping</placeName> missal (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National Archives, Fr 26883</ref>), and the
                other only as an addition to an unlocalised missal from the turn of the twelfth
                century (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National Archives, Fr 26233</ref>). The later office is even less
                distinctive, agreeing generally with those in Linköping sources; although the
                generic <hi rend="italic">introitus</hi>
                <hi rend="italic">Gloria et honore</hi> is only found in two
                  <placeName>Uppsala</placeName> offices for <persName role="saint">Erik</persName>
                  (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National Archives, Fr 27594</ref> and <ref type="mss">Fr 25492</ref>), the sequence
                  <hi rend="italic">Gratulemur dulci</hi> is only found in
                  <placeName>Linköping</placeName> and one <placeName>Västerås</placeName> source
                  (<ref type="mss">Stockholm, National Archives, Fr 25016</ref>). </p>
              <p>The <hi rend="italic">confiteor</hi> on <locus>fol. 17r</locus> has been seen as an
                example of the <placeName>Uppsala</placeName> tradition, but the saints’ offices in
                the manuscript do not agree with the known traditions of the archdiocese. The
                  <placeName>cathedral of Linköping</placeName> was consecrated to SS <persName
                  role="saint">Peter</persName> and <persName role="saint">Paul</persName> and had
                an altar to St Erik, so the prayer may follow Linköping practice (Lauri Hirvonen,
                personal communication, 17 April 2014). However, the cursory and selective contents
                of the book suggest rather that it was intended for a parish church.</p>

                flourished, and a <date type="addition" from="1400" to="1499">15th-cent.</date> hand
                has added flourishing to an initial on <locus>fol. 72v</locus> (<hi rend="italic">De
                  resurrectione domini officium</hi>). As the change in decoration coincides with
                the change in main scribal hands it is possible that each scribe was his own
                illuminator.</p>

          <history>
            <origin>The book was produced for use in an unknown Swedish parish church by two
              moderately skilled scribes writing in somewhat antiquated style. The scribes wrote in
              separate quires, and a separate origin for these respective parts is not impossible,
              although nothing appears to require it (e.g. the part written by hand II, fols.
                17–32, does not seem to have been bound before the
              present binding). They were, however, united early, for hand I has added a few lines
              of text and notation at the end of the part written by hand II (fol. <locus>32vb</locus>); hand II’s
              stint must therefore be earlier. </origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>On <locus>fol. 1r</locus>, ‘Orihpää kyrka tillhörig’ in a <date type="addition" from="1600" to="1699">17th-cent.</date> hand; and, in a similar hand,
                on <locus>fol. 90r</locus>, ‘Pastor Ambrosius ex Keihäskoski 1670’ and ‘Pastor Sigfridus L:lle
                Mäkiäis 1683’.</p><p>The first-named is probably <persName role="owner">Ambrosius Rechander (later
                  Regulinus)</persName>, chaplain at <placeName type="provenance">Yläne</placeName> (in <placeName type="provenance">Pöytyä</placeName> parish, of which <placeName>Oripää</placeName> was another chapel)
                  from <date type="provenance">1663</date> and curate of <placeName type="provenance">Pöytyä</placeName> from <date type="provenance">1670</date>, where he died in 1683. The latter is
                  probably <persName role="owner">Sigfrid Laurentii Bergius</persName>, chaplain at <placeName type="provenance">Yläne</placeName> from 1670 and curate of Pöytyä
                  from 1684, where he died in 1714 (see <bibl>Strandberg 1832, vol. 1, 162</bibl>; <bibl>Kotivuori 2005,
                    s.v. Ambrosius Rechander and s.v. Sigfrid Bergius</bibl>).</p>
            </provenance>
            <acquisition>
              <p>It is not known when and how the book came to Pöytyä (Oripää), where it was found
                in <date>1683</date>. The manuscript likely came to the <orgName>National Library of Finland</orgName> along with other manuscripts from Pöytyä in <date type="acquisition">1863</date>.</p>
