                  modern foliation (in pencil in the upper halves of the right-hand margins of
                  recto-sides) was made the last folio of that quire was misplaced and therefore

                  missing between it and fol. 30. Overall the book is in rather poor condition. The
                  outer margins are dirty, indicating that the book has been in heavy use for a
                  period, and the edges of folia are frequently frayed.</condition>

              <p>Rather formal gothic cursive for <lang>Swedish</lang> and <lang>Finnish</lang> text
                (hybrida used in places for effect, e.g. fol. 25r lines 5 and 6), and humanistic
                cursive for <lang>Latin</lang> (fols. <locus>15r</locus>–<locus>17r</locus>,
                  <locus>27r</locus>–<locus>28v</locus>), probably entirely by one scribe. Rubrics
                mostly in humanistic cursive. Based on the uneven fading (e.g.
                  <locus>1v</locus>–<locus>2r</locus>, where most of the notation has faded but the
                text is still black), some of the inks used by the scribe have kept better than
                others.</p>

              <p>Gothic majuscules for sentence initials, highly decorative lombards (e.g. fol.
                  <locus>1r</locus>) or gothic versals (fol. <locus>25r</locus>) intended for the
                initials of hymns but for the most part left unexecuted; all decoration entirely
                monochromatic.</p>

            <bindingDesc>
              <p>Limp binding in a single leaf from a liturgical book of <date from="1350" to="1399"
                  >saec. XIV<hi rend="superscript">2</hi></date>. The binding is rather loose, and
                the book is evidently missing some leaves from the end.</p>
              <p>The covers are from a liturgical <title>kalendar</title> of the <placeName>diocese
                  of Turku</placeName> (September – December). Parchment, 25 × ca. 34 (19 × ca. 25).
                Text 31 lines in two columns, ruled with ink and pricked in (at least) the outer
                margin, one hole per line of text. Gothic bookhand by one moderately skilled
                scribe.</p>
              <p>The kalendar conforms to Dominican use but ignores the feasts of regular use. The
                Feast of St <persName role="saint">Anna</persName> 15 December confirms that the
                kalendar follows the secular use of the <origPlace>diocese of Turku</origPlace>. The
                feast of St <persName role="saint">Birgitta</persName> is missing, which suggests
                that the kalendar predates her canonization in <date notAfter="1391">1391</date>.
                Note also that 14.9. <hi rend="italic">Exaltatio crucis</hi> is only <hi
                  rend="italic">semiduplex</hi>, and <hi rend="italic">XI milium uirginum</hi> only
                  <hi rend="italic">memoria</hi>. A hand of <date from="1400" to="1499">saec.
                  XV</date> has added 7.10. St <persName role="saint">Birgitta</persName>
                <hi rend="italic">totum duplex</hi>, and upgraded the feasts of SS. <persName
                  role="saint">Francis</persName> (4.10.) and <persName role="saint"
                  >Denis</persName> (9.10.) from <hi rend="italic">simplex</hi> to <hi rend="italic"
                  >duplex</hi>. (For further analysis of the contents see <bibl>Malin 1925,
                  103–104</bibl>.) Due to the trimming of the folio the grades for the feasts in
                December are missing.</p><p>There is also an almost completely faded
                  inscription written on the folded-down margin of the folio. The fragment comes from
                  a relatively large liturgical book, probably a missal. The book was
                  probably intended for a parish, perhaps <placeName>Uusikaupunki</placeName>, where it was still in use in
                  the <date from="1570" to="1579">1570s</date> before being bound in the present volume.</p>

          <history>
            <origin><p>In the late sixteenth century, after <date>1576</date>, the date recorded on
                the leaf used as the cover, and probably <origDate notBefore="1588">after
                  1588</origDate>, when <persName role="author">Jacobus Finno</persName>’s Finnish
                hymnary was published, a priest in <origPlace>Uusikirkko</origPlace> prepared a book
                containing a series of chants and hymns used in the mass. </p></origin>

                  to="1699">saec. XVII</date>, ‘Anno 1694 Kyrkoherdens Enckia Elisabeth Mats dotter
                Heuren’.</p><p>Fol. <locus>2r</locus>, in ink, in a hand of <date type="addition"
                  from="1800" to="1899">saec. XIX</date>, ‘Anmärkt i Nykyrko Kyrkas Inventarie
                Längd, 1826’.</p><p>The kalendar leaf used for the cover of the book records the
                death of the wife of the vicar of <placeName type="provenance"
                  >Uusikirkko</placeName>, <persName role="owner">Andreas Petri</persName> (inc. ‘Anno Domini 157...’), and of his
                wife in 1576 (inc. ‘... to obiit honestissima persona uxor ...’) by a hand of <date type="addition" from="1500" to="1599">saec.
                  XVI</date>. Both notes are faded and the latter notice has been treated with some substance
                that has spread the ink around it. Also found on the covers is the shelfmark, in
                pencil. As pen trials, hands of saec. <date type="addition" from="1500" to="1699">XVI–XVII</date> have written the names of the months
                of the year at the heads of the columns. </p>

              <p>The book was kept at <placeName type="provenance">Uusikirkko</placeName>, arriving at what is now the <orgName>National Library of Finland</orgName> at an
                unknown date.</p>
