                collection is also found in <ref type="mss">Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek,
                  Cod. Guelf. 439 Helmst</ref>. Our manuscript adds a short draft for an alternate
                sermon on <hi rend="italic">Dominica 25 post pentecostes</hi> (fol. <locus>75v</locus>). The
                collection includes both the summer and the winter cycle. Fols.

              <p>Several hands writing <date type="script" from="1400" to="1499">saec. XV</date> gothic cursives
                by German hands (according to <bibl>Lehtinen 1996, 11</bibl>). In part I, containing
                the sermon collection, one main hand is responsible for much of the text. The first
                part is dated to <origDate>1400</origDate> (fol. <locus>116v</locus>). In the second part there are
                several hands writing longer sections. The quality of the script varies. In the
                second section, headlines occasionally written in textualis. Additions by several
                hands of <date type="addition" from="1400" to="1499">saec. XV</date> writing gothic cursives.</p>

              <p>In part I: initials in red and brown or black, often with parts left uncoloured and
                forming different shapes (on fol. <locus>111v</locus> an animal’s beak?). In part II: simple red
                lombards for initials. Some are of very low quality. Overlining and letter emphasis
                in red, occasional paragraph marks in red.</p>

            <bindingDesc>
              <p>Wooden binding with red leather covers decorated with blind-stamped frames and
                cross-hatching. Five bosses were attached to front and back covers. Remnants of two
                hook-clasps attached to the edges of the covers. A parchment charter from <persName
                  role="author">Pope Nicolas V</persName> concerning the city of
                  <placeName type="binding">Greifswald</placeName>, dated <date when="1449-07-26">26.7.1449</date>,
                has been used for the two pastedowns.</p>

          <history>
            <origin><p>Much of the manuscript is taken up by a collection of Sunday sermons and by a
              selection from the <title><hi rend="italic">Legenda Aurea</hi></title>. The manuscript features
                several scribes and may be a result of compiling text from different sources. This
                is also suggested by the fact that the binding seems to have taken place several
                years later than the date <origDate>1400</origDate> given in part I (although it is possible that the
                date does not refer to the date of writing). The charter used for the pastedowns as
                well as the vernacular additions (<locus>fol. 290r</locus>) suggest an origin and early provenance
              in <origPlace>Germany</origPlace>. The sermon collection on fols. 1–116 is found in two manuscripts
                originating from Southern Germany, which may suggest that this manuscript also comes
                from that area.

            <provenance>
              <p>The charter used in the binding suggests that the binding took place in
                  <origPlace>Germany</origPlace> and that the manuscript was still there in the
                  <date type="provenance" from="1440" to="1460">middle of saec. XV</date>. On
                <locus>fol. 290r</locus> definitions of ‘expositio’ in German.</p><p>By <date type="provenance">1654</date> the manuscript had ended up in Finland and in <placeName type="provenance">Pöytyä church</placeName>. <locus>Fol.
                  1r</locus> (<date from="1700" to="1799">saec. XVIII hand</date>): ‘Pöytis
                Moderkycka Tilhörig’. Mentioned in the church inventory <date type="provenance"
                  >1654</date>, <date type="provenance">1670</date> and <date type="provenance"
                  >1729</date>.</p>
