                      rend="italic">Mathias Westh’s Codex</hi></ref> were copied before
                    <origDate notAfter="1583">1583</origDate>, because the versions following those of <persName role="author">Jacobus
                    Finno</persName> (published that year) were written underneath. This might be
                      the case with the sequence on pp. <locus>23</locus>–<locus>29</locus>, but on pp.
                      <locus>49</locus>–<locus>56</locus> the Finno version is copied in the same hand as the older
                      versions. Although the hands in this part (pp. <locus>1</locus>–<locus>56</locus>) vary somewhat,
                  it appears more probable that the manuscript was entirely a copy made <date>after
                    1583</date>. The choral-part must postdate the publication of <title><hi
                      rend="italic">Then Swenska Psalmboken</hi></title> in <date type="printed"
                    >1594</date>, and its latter part must postdate the publication of
                      <title><persName role="author">Hemmingus of Masku</persName>’s <hi rend="italic">Yxi Vähä Suomenkielinen Virsikirja

          <history>
            <origin><p>A very small <title>gradual</title> and <title>hymnary</title>, for the most part copied in the <origDate from="1575" to="1624">last
                quarter of the sixteenth century or in the first quarter of the
              seventeenth</origDate>. Assuming that <persName role="owner">Henricus
                Jacobi</persName> did indeed sign his name in the <date from="1500" to="1599">sixteenth century</date> (as Kurvinen
              reports), some of the manuscript was copied in that century. In lieu of a more
              accurate indicator the date of the manuscript appears to fall between <origDate from="1589">1589</origDate>
              and Mathias Benedicti’s additions in <origDate to="1635">1635</origDate>. The book was kept, perhaps even copied but
              certainly used, at <origPlace>Ilmajoki</origPlace> from the seventeenth century, and came from there to the
              National Library.</p></origin>
              <provenance>
              <p><locus>P. 185</locus>: ‘Henri[c] Jac[ob] An[no 15—]’. The beginning of the date was
                still extant when Kurvinen examined the manuscript, but was already missing when
                Schalin consulted it (the square brackets denote the extent of the currently extant
                text). The marking may be connected to the markings on <locus>p. 183</locus> (‘Liber
                Templi Ilmolensis’ and two, with variant spellings; see also <locus>p. 186</locus>);
                if so, the person in question might be <persName role="owner">Henricus Jacobi
                  Strigelius Pöyttensis</persName>, who is mentioned as curate in
                  <placeName type="provenance">Ilmajoki</placeName> in 1601–1629 (<bibl>Leinberg 1903,
                  74</bibl>). It is unfortunate that the date has gone missing, as an ownership mark
                made in the sixteenth century would be the only sure way to date the bulk of the
                manuscript to the late sixteenth rather than the early seventeenth century. See also
                pp. <locus>173</locus>–<locus>174</locus>, notes of banns of marriage and marriages in
                <date>1654</date> in <placeName>Ilmajoki</placeName>, and, on p. <locus>172</locus>, a note on
                persons accused of premarital sex (written in the same hand as the banns on p.
                <locus>173</locus>).</p><p><locus>P. 184</locus>, ‘Marthinus Benedicti Bjornb. A. 1635’ (also p.
                  <locus>171</locus>: ‘Martinus Benedicti Bior.’). This may be <persName role="owner">Martinus
                  Benedicti, Björneburgensis</persName>, student in <placeName>Tartu
                  University</placeName> in <date>1643</date> (<bibl>Kotivuori 2005, s.v.
                  Mårten</bibl>). The inscription was most likely made in <placeName
                  type="provenance">Ilmajoki</placeName>, where the book seems to have spent the
                whole of the <date from="1600" to="1649">first half of the seventeenth
                  century</date>.</p> <p><locus>P. 31</locus>: Struck-through: ‘Biornborgh. <persName role="owner">Eschillus Pauli
                    Kyroissi</persName>’, written in a hand similar to (yet probably distinct from) the main hand
                on the page of <date from="1575" to="1624">saec. XVI 4/4–XVII ¼</date>. This person, from <placeName>Pori</placeName>, like <persName>Martinus
                  Benedicti</persName>, is otherwise unknown.</p><p>On fol. <locus>1ar</locus> there is a faded and illegible
                  inscription, probably a name.</p></provenance>
