                <condition><p>Water damage, to the lower outer corners of folia, and some staining.
                    There are lacunae at least at the beginning and after fols. 43, 114, 115, and
                    116. The book was already damaged at an early stage: fols. 68, 69 and 70 have
                    been torn and repaired by pasting replacements to the torn leaves, on which a
                    hand of <date type="addition" from="1500" to="1549">saec. XVI<hi
                        rend="superscript">1</hi></date> supplied the missing text. Some of the
                    missing leaves may have been lost around the same time. Early damage is also
                    suggested by the use of parchment leaves to strengthen the binding and the
                    leaves, e.g. at fol. 120 (1,5 × 11 and 30 × 5, written area 6), 121 and 123 (3 ×
                    13,5), and D 71/162, fols. 26 and 31, 4 × 11,5. There are also signs of strips
                    that have since been lost, e.g. at fols.
                    <locus>101v</locus>–<locus>102r</locus>.</p><p>Six leaves have been bound in
                    manuscript <ref type="mss">D 71/162</ref>: after fol. 114 of the present
                    manuscript, D 71/162 fols. 31 and 27; after fol. 116, fols. 28–29. The present
                    fol. 115 should follow these, and be in turn followed by fols. 30 and 26 of D
                    71/162, and the present fol. 119.</p><p>A scribe of <date type="addition"
                      from="1400" to="1499">saec. XV</date> has inserted a bifolium (fols. 117–118);
                    fols. 166 and 193–194 (the latter measuring only 10 × 16) are additions of <date
                      type="addition" from="1700" to="1799">saec. XVIII</date>, the latter has been
                    pasted between the stubs of two folia apparently excised (with three others)
                    when the manuscript was first prepared.</p><p>The leaves have been trimmed,
                    probably on the occasion of the last rebinding, rendering several rubrics and
                    marginal annotations partly illegible.</p></condition>

                decoration. On fols. <locus>51r</locus>–<locus>53r</locus>, these initials are
                rather crudely pen-drawn and lombard-like and coloured red. On fols.
                  <locus>89r</locus>–<locus>98r</locus> coloured lombards with pen-drawn initials
                are touched with red; on fols. <locus>98v</locus>–<locus>99r</locus>, with green,
                then left uncoloured until fols. <locus>104v</locus>–<locus>106r</locus>, when both
                colours are used, then again uncoloured but for fol. <locus>149v</locus>, fols.

          <history>
            <origin><p>An <title>antiphonary</title>, copied in the <origDate from="1475" to="1549">late fifteenth or early sixteenth century</origDate>,
              perhaps in <origPlace>Tammela</origPlace>, where it seems to have been used (at least by the end of the
              sixteenth century, as witnessed to by the additions).</p><p><bibl>Taitto (1992, 390)</bibl> argued that the book originated in the <placeName>Naantali</placeName> Birgittine
                monastery, because (in addition, of course, to the office for St <persName role="saint">Birgitta</persName>) the book
                supposedly contains an office for St <persName role="saint">Joseph</persName>, and the cult of Joseph, the husband of
                Mary, is known in Finland only from Naantali. However, although there is (on fol.
                <locus>58v</locus>) a later (<date type="addition" from="1500" to="1599">saec. XVI</date>) rubric, ‘Hystoria de Joseph’, the chant it designates,
                ‘Videntes ioseph a longe ...’, is a responsory for the third Sunday in Lent, here in
                its right place in the temporal sequence, referring of course to Joseph the son of
                Jacob, and not a part of any office for the saint of that name. The annotation more
                probably reflects reformation interest in the biblical sources of Catholic
                liturgy.</p></origin>

                linking curate <persName>Peder Kurck</persName>, who is known to have donated a copy of <hi rend="italic"
                  >Missale Aboense</hi> (B. Ghotan 1488; now Helsinki, National Library, Rv. Käsik.

                this book in Tammela (<hi rend="italic">pace</hi>

            <acquisition>
              <p>It was kept in <placeName type="provenance">Tammela</placeName> until taken by
                a curate of Tammela, <persName role="owner">Nils Magnus Tolpo</persName>, to <placeName>Turku</placeName> in <date>1826</date> in response to the cathedral
                chapter’s request for the older books of parishes to be sent for inspection. The book

                the <orgName>Turku Swedish Lyceum</orgName> in <date type="acquisition">1834</date> (<bibl>Schalin 1946, 5–6, 10, 15</bibl>; <bibl>Schybergson 1939, 10,
                  17</bibl>). That library was transferred to <orgName>Åbo Akademi</orgName> after the institute’s foundation in
                <date type="acquisition">1918</date>. Inside front cover a sticker reading ‘GYMNASIUM I ÅBO tillhörig’, and in pencil ‘17
                  Antiphonarium’ and the shelfmark ‘D71/161’.</p>
