                    Swedish in the upper margins. On fols. <locus>1v</locus>–<locus>22r</locus> there are also
                    annotations in <lang>Finnish</lang>, in a hand closer to that of the main text, supplying
                  scattered source indications, Latin juridical terms, and alternative
                  translations.</p>

              <p>One main scribe writing rather formal Gothic Cursive and using Hybrida for book and
                chapter titles. The appearance of the script is somewhat archaic.</p>

              <p>The title of each book has been flourished with black and green ink.</p>

            <bindingDesc>
              <p>Restored binding of <date type="binding" from="1500" to="1599">saec. XVI</date>, full leather,
                dark brown calfskin on boards with raised bands. Two brass clasps. The binding was
                rebacked in a restoration carried out in the twentieth century. </p>
             <p>Blind-tooled decoration, on the front cover a blind-stamped image of Christ
                on the cross, with the legend ‘Propter scelus popu[li]’; on the back St <persName
                  role="saint">George</persName> killing the dragon, with the legend ‘Mors ero mors
               tuam’. The book has gauffered gilt edges with coloured floral patterns.</p>

          <history>
            <origin><p>A high quality lawbook produced in the <origDate from="1550" to="1599">latter half of the sixteenth century</origDate>
              for the use of a crown official, commissioned or later acquired by <persName role="owner">Clemens Juusten</persName>
              who was mayor of <placeName type="provenance">Viipuri</placeName> at the <date from="1600" to="1625">beginning of saec. XVII</date>.</p></origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>According to <bibl>Airila and Harmas (1930, xvi)</bibl> the inside of the front
                  cover had the marking ‘Clemett Seffwerinsson Jwsten manu propria
                    [15]99’, indicating the ownership of the book by <persName
                    role="owner">Clement Juusten</persName>, bailiff in
                    <placeName>Hollola</placeName> in <date>1588</date> and possibly also in
                    <date>1592–1594</date>, and mayor of <placeName type="provenance">Viipuri</placeName> in
                    <date>1600–1625</date> (<bibl>Ramsay 1909–1916, 216</bibl>; <bibl>Almquist
                    1917–1923, vol. 4, 38</bibl>). The notice appears to have been lost when the
                  binding was restored and the pastedowns and flyleaves (<locus>fols.
                  [I–IV]</locus>) were changed.</p>
            </provenance>
            <acquisition><p>How the book found its way
              to the <orgName>National Library of Finland</orgName> is not known. On <locus>fol. [a]r</locus>, in pencil in a
              hand of <date from="1800" to="1899">saec. XIX</date>: ‘No. 20 in 4to’, apparently
              an old shelfmark. The current shelfmark in pencil on the back pastedown,
              <locus>fol. [IV]r</locus>: ‘C III 10’. The blue stamp of the
              <orgName>University Library</orgName>’s manuscript department on the
              front pastedown (<locus>fol. [I]r</locus>).</p></acquisition>
