‘correct’ order, since the different sections of a manuscript could be intermingled.
Here, the manuscript has been reconstructed according to the usual sequence of <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">temporale</div>, <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">sanctorale</div>, <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">commune sanctorum</div>. <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">Dedicatio ecclesiae</div> has been

<div class="tei-tag-condition"><div class="tei-tag-p">Currently attached to the modern flyleaves of the rebound <div class="tei-tag-title"><div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">Then Swenska Kyrkeordningen</div></div>. Both fragments were
trimmed when reused as covers: the fragment at the back is missing its outer and
lower margins, and the fragment at the front both its outer and inner margins.
The fragment at the back includes the inner margin of another leaf from the same
antiphonary, possibly the one now found at the front of the book (but note that
if the leaves in fact formed an original bifolium then the original manuscript
would have arranged all its Feasts in one temporal series, instead of in
separate series of <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">de tempore</div> and <div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">de
sanctis</div>).</div><div class="tei-tag-p">Three sides of both folia are folded, probably in
connection with their reuse as covers – note that their combined width when
folded falls short of that needed to cover the book, suggesting that the spine
of the book was covered with a separate slip that has since been lost. This
possibility is supported by the marks left by the bands of the binding, which
indicate that the fragment now at the front of the book is the original back
cover, and the fragment at the back the front cover. If the two leaves
originated as one bifolium this seems to have been also its original
orientation, in that case probably the outermost of its original
quire.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">Both fragments are in very poor condition, even considering their
reuse as covers. The sides that presumably faced outward in the cover are deeply
stained and the inner sides blackened to the point of illegibility probably from
the glue used to fix the cover fillings. Both folia have worn through in places,
and from the latter halves of both material has been cut away by a diagonal
incision: the detached portions have been sewn back (this piece is now missing
from the fragment at the back, although holes show it was once sewn
there).</div></div>

interior spaces coloured red. Rubrics in red (including the contractions marking the
genres of chants), apparently in the hand of the main text.</div>

<div class="tei-tag-p">The original cover was filled with leaves from a <div data-from="1585" data-to="1599" class="tei-tag-date">late-sixteenth-century</div> collection of letters from and to various persons
usually in <div class="tei-tag-placeName">Turku</div> and <div class="tei-tag-placeName">Viipuri</div> (now <div data-type="mss" class="tei-tag-ref">Helsinki, National Archives, Biographica, Kupiainen, Henrik
Henriksson</div>). It thus seems that the book was bound by or for somebody
(<div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Bertill Andersson</div>?) with connections in
<div data-type="provenance" class="tei-tag-placeName">Viipuri</div>, where the book ended up in the
early seventeenth century.</div>

recorded owner, <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Bertill Andersson</div>, to bind a copy of <div class="tei-tag-title"><div data-rend="italic" class="tei-tag-hi">Then Swenska
Kyrkeordningen</div></div>, at some stage between the printing of the book in <div class="tei-tag-placeName">Stockholm</div>
in <div class="tei-tag-date">1571</div> and its acquisition by Bishop <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Olaus Elimaeus</div> in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1628</div>.</div></div>
<div class="tei-tag-provenance">
<div class="tei-tag-p">The earliest recorded owner of the book is one <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Bertill Andersson</div>, whose ownership
mark on the title-page of the volume records that he bought it in <div data-type="provenance" class="tei-tag-placeName">Turku</div> in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1592</div>. If
he was its first owner, the volume may not have been bound at this stage.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">The
second recorded owner of the book is <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Olaus Elimaeus</div>, bishop of <div class="tei-tag-placeName">Viipuri</div>, whose
ownership note is written on the recto-side of what appears to have been the last
flyleaf of the volume, the latter leaf of a bifolium of different paper from the
printed book. Bishop Olaus’ hand seems to have copied an excerpt from Ecclesiasticus
found inside the back cover (‘Syrac. 4. circa finem capitis: Tala icke emot
sanningenne vthan låt … håller medh then andra’). He records having bought the book
in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1628</div>, and by all evidence it was bound by then.</div>

singletons and inserted smaller slips. Fols. A 3 – A 4 (modern fols. 3–4) are a
bifolium, which has been pasted between fols. A 1 (fol. 2) and A 2 (fol. 5).
After fol. 6 (A 5) three stubs are visible. Fol. 10 is a smaller slip, pasted to
fol. 11 (A 9); fol. 12 is a smaller slip. Fols. 15–16 have been pasted to fol.
14 (B I) and ignored in older foliation. Fols. 21 and 22 (B 6–7) are possibly
later additions with a different type of paper. Fols. 32 and 33 are smaller
slips. A stub is visible after fol. 34 (C 7). Fol. 36 is a smaller slip. Fol. 43
is a smaller slip. A leaf has been cropped after fol. 51 (E 2) (old foliation
continues with E 3); a stub visible after fol. 62 (F 3); fol. 64 is a small

contemporary foliation are separate units. They both contain watermarks that do
not appear in the first section. Different watermarks are also found on some of
the leaves that have been added to the first section.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">The manuscript is in
good overall condition. There is some staining and water damage, but no loss of
text has occurred.</div></div>

<div class="tei-tag-origin"><div class="tei-tag-p">The manuscript contains historical notes and various material related to the
estates of <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Ivar Fleming</div> (d. 1548) who held various offices in <div class="tei-tag-origPlace">Finland</div>. The estates
were later passed to his heir, <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Lars Fleming</div> (d. 1562), and still later to his widow
<div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Birgitta Larsdotter (Tre rosor)</div>. After Birgitta’s death in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1586</div>, the estates and
documents concerning them passed to the Bielke family through her daughter’s
marriage.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">Most of the writing has been done by one experienced main scribe,
but others have made additions to the text. Several slips with additional
information have been entered between leaves. The manuscript has one main section
with contemporary foliation and two additional quires, written on a different type
of paper. They do, however, contain texts by a hand that appears in the first
section.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">The manuscript was written over a long period of time. The writing
seems to have begun during Ivar’s time and continued after his demise. The latest
note concerns the year <div data-notAfter="1585" class="tei-tag-origDate">1585</div>. Roos has suggested that the scribe served the family
for a number of years and had an interest in genealogy as evidenced by several
entries concerning families. There are notes (e.g. fol. <div class="tei-tag-locus">67v</div>) referring to other
account books, which show that the book was part of a larger
collection.</div><div class="tei-tag-p">Remnants of one such related account book may be found in
<div data-type="mss" class="tei-tag-ref">Helsinki, National Library, Hö.II.28 (Tengström – Lagus)</div>, which contains fragments
written by the same hand as the current manuscript. The collection includes six
slips related to different pieces of land and a small quire of nine leaves with
information mainly on the inheritance of <div class="tei-tag-persName">Birgitta of Lokalax</div> (related to fols.
<div class="tei-tag-locus">50r</div>–<div class="tei-tag-locus">55v</div> of this manuscript). The layout of these notes is similar to those in the
rest of the manuscript and they often provide additional information on estates
and/or persons mentioned in the manuscript. The latest notes concern the year <div class="tei-tag-date">1585</div>.
Although they are clearly a product of the same writing process, it is not obvious
that the notes in fact formed a part of the manuscript at any point. If they were a
part of the manuscript, they may have been removed by <div class="tei-tag-persName">Wilhelm Gabriel Lagus</div> (d.
1859), notorious for his collections of historical documents removed from the
archives.</div></div>

<div class="tei-tag-p">The manuscript was probably originally housed at <div data-type="provenance" class="tei-tag-placeName">Sundholm</div>. After <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Birgitta Larsdotter</div>'s demise in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1586</div>, it was likely to the Bielke family through her daughter’s
marriage.</div>

<div class="tei-tag-p">The book was donated to the <div class="tei-tag-orgName">Linköping Stiftsbibliotek</div> in <div data-type="acquisition" class="tei-tag-date">1818</div> by <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Johan Fredrik Odencrantz</div> (d.
1819) (see inner front cover). How it came into his possession is uncertain. One
possibility is that it was passed to him through his grandfather, <div data-role="owner" class="tei-tag-persName">Andreas Olavi

collected under the shelfmark <div data-type="mss" class="tei-tag-ref">F.m. IV.115 in the National Library</div>, crown bailiffs in
the seventeenth century used its leaves as wrappers for tax records.</div></div>

<div data-from="1300" data-to="1399" class="tei-tag-origDate">saec. XIV</div> <div class="tei-tag-title">breviary</div>; the added section contains additional offices (fol. 499–506).
Since the breviary contains the Feast of St <div data-role="saint" class="tei-tag-persName">Thomas Aquinas</div>, the manuscript must
postdate his canonisation in <div data-notBefore="1333" class="tei-tag-origDate">1333</div>. St <div data-role="saint" class="tei-tag-persName">Francis</div> is included in the litany, but for
some reason left out of the sanctorale and mentioned only in a <div data-type="addition" data-from="1400" data-to="1499" class="tei-tag-date">15th-century</div> addition
on fol. <div class="tei-tag-locus">454v</div>. The rest of the sanctorale is of little help in determining the origin
or date of the manuscript. There are no local saints included in either section. The
high quality of the parchment, script and decoration seem to point towards <div class="tei-tag-origPlace">Western
Europe</div>, perhaps <div class="tei-tag-origPlace">France</div>, as the place of origin.</div></div>
