By script and layout fols. 1–4 and 5–109 may have separate origins, and the text on fol. 17r–v appears to have been a later addition.
Text and notation on eight to ten lines (or as many as 26 text lines without notation), blind-ruled.
Varieties of Gothic cursive and Humanistic minuscule. The chorale (fols. ) appears to be somewhat later than most of the manuscript, and the
credo
section (fols. ) somewhat later again.
Decadent square notation on four black lines, but for fols. –v and with round mensural notation on four black lines, and fols. , , with round mensural notation on five black lines.
Pen-drawn Gothic versals for the initials of chants, decorated often with diamond shapes; flourished section initials on fols. , coloured or flourished with colour (with brownish red) on fols. , , . The chorale (fols. ) is missing most of its projected initials, which may have been intended to resemble those few executed, on fols. , , in red and green or brown. On fols. initials are completely missing; on fols. very simple Gothic versals used as initials, distinctive mainly by their size. On and simple undecorated roman versals.
A recycled (and tanned?) parchment on (very thin) wooden boards padded with paper. The paper fillings seem to derive from a set of
Latin
study notes.
The covers have been repaired using plastic tape, and a paper label has been attached to the spine, carrying the current shelfmark ‘III d 1’
The volume was formerly held closed by tying two plain leather straps, of which the one attached to the front cover is still extant.
The parchment used as covers comes from a liturgical book of
saec. XV
(?). The sides facing outward are thoroughly worn and illegible (possibly because the parchment was treated (tanned?) before applying it to the binding), and as the covers are still intact, the sides facing inwards are not visible.
A
Lutheran liturgical miscellany
, copied over a period of time (and possibly with constituent parts from different sources) for use in a parish in
Finland
. The book came to be preserved at
Loimaa
but need not have been copied there.
On the front cover, barely legible but underlined with red, is a name which Schalin read as ‘
Johannes Salmenius
’, and identified as the director cantus of the Academy of
Turku
and curate of
Kuopio
, 1644–1683 (
Schalin 1946, 51
;
Dahlström 1996
).
On the inside of the front cover (twice) and on the inside of the back cover, the blue sigil of Loimaa parish with the legend, ‘LOIMAAN KIRKON SINETTI PS. 23’
The inside of the front cover carries several
probationes pennae
and a few additional prayers, and a marking (upside down).
The current shelfmark is written in pencil on fol. .
